Latest Migration Update

The Australian government announced on the 10th May a series of proposed changes to the migration policy that is expected to come into effect from 1st July 2012.

Applicants who can lodge their PR application before the commencement of the new policy will not be affected. Also, people who, on 8 February 2010, held or had applied for a Skilled Graduate (subclass 485) visa are able to apply for a permanent skilled visa under the current system, until the end of 2012.

Applicants who will not complete their studies by 1st July 2012 and will lodge their PR application after that, the following new policy will apply.

The immigration department has proposed to reform the application procedure of skilled migration.  The proposed Skilled Migrant Selection Model will introduce an Expression of Interest (EOI) as follows.

1.    Prospective applicant lodges an EOI
2.    Details is stored in the database
3.    The immigration department and state and territory governments select prospective migrants from the database and send invitations. (The initial section round is scheduled for January 2013)
4.    Invitee lodges PR applications within two month after getting the invitation.

Meanwhile, Australian employers will search the database manually and contact prospective applicants directly for working visa or employer sponsored migration visa.

For more information and how the changes may affect your plans, please contact your ACIC consultant.
