Pohan Sung   From Taiwan, ACIC student, 1989

The Dream
To study a Master of Commerce and become a business manager

The Difficulties
At that time, Pohan's Bachelor of Science (Biology) degree in Taiwan was not recognised as equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree, and his field of study was not relevant to commerce. He also lacked work experience. It was not possible for him to receive a direct offer for a Masters degree in 1989.

The ProcesS
Pohan was among the first group of Taiwanese students ACIC served. Based on Pohan's academic background and his interest, and after discussions with him and his parents, we designed a unique pathway that was practical and suited his needs.

Instead of placing him in a Bachelor course, which was the traditional path, we selected a respected business college for him to study a Diploma of Business. Our aim was to improve his English skills as well as his knowledge of commerce, and at the same time to build up his confidence in Australian tertiary study. The plan worked successfully. Pohan achieved outstanding results for his diploma course, which enabled him to a Master of Commerce.

The Outcome
Obtained a Diploma of Business & Certificate of Sales Management
Obtained Master of Commerce, Marketing (UWS)
Obtained Master of Business, International Marketing (UTS)
Subsequently worked in Taiwan and Australia for 2 years
Appointed by ACIC head office to set up its branch offices in Taiwan.
Today, Pohan is managing four ACIC offices in Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung.

The comment from the student
ACIC is like an architect who not only designed my study plan, but also helped me to look into the broadened future of my overseas study. The study plan, which I followed and succeeded, was practical and suited my needs. It saved me a lot of time and money. Today, I am proud of my two Masters degrees, and I am honored to be part of ACIC to serve more Taiwanese students and help them to achieve their goals and realise their dreams.
