Sara Lai  from Taiwan, ACIC Student, 2006

The Dream

To obtain a Masters degree in Nursing.

The Difficulties

Sara already holds a diploma in nursing in Taiwan with 7 years of working experience. She would like complete a Masters degree in the shortest possible time. Sara also needed to improve her English before proceeding to university study.

The Process

Sara first approached ACIC through our Taiwan Office in September 2002. Our ACIC Taiwanese staff arranged Sara to study a 20-week English course in order to equip her with the necessary English for further study.

With Sara's hardwork, she scored an excellent 6.5 in her first attempt in IELTS. Due to Sara's experience and good English results, ACIC's Sydney Office then helped Sara to apply directly for a Masters program bypassing the usual Bachelor degree. She quickly received an offer from UTS for the Master of Nursing (Professional Studies) and started her studies in July 2003.

After completing her Master degree, Sara came to ACIC Sydney Office again in 2004. At that time, she wanted to become a registered nurse in Australia and this required her to be professionally recognized by the Australian Nursing Council.

ACIC then recommended Sara to study a one-year Bachelor of Nursing conversion course in ACU, which recognises graduates as registered nurses in Australia. She started her course in Februrary 2005 and completed in December in the same year.

The Outcome

After completing her studies in ACU, Sara has become a permanent resident in Australia and is now happily working in an Australian hospital. The theatre is quite new and she feels comfortable to work in. Her workmates are mostly friendly and talkative. As a new person, she is welcomed and considered to be reliable by her workmates.

Sara also recently appeared in a local newspaper covering news on nursing in Australia. Sara said, "Life is full of surprises that sometimes shock you so hard or sweeten your heart. I love my work anyway. Never thought that I can be on the front page of the newspaper. Thanks for the special hat that one of my workmates lend to me. Love the photo I was in!"

The Comment from the Student

I am very satisfied with the services from ACIC. Especially from my consultant Kitty, who has helped me to finish my course in bachelor and master, and to gain my qualification as a registered nurse in Australia. Many thanks from me to the lovely people in ACIC.
